Our Experts for this Week’s Valley Gives Trainings

Susan Alston M.S., Principal, Philanthropy Guild

As the Principal and Founder of the Philanthropy Guild, a new organization (2013) that incorporates associates into the Guild based on their expertise in specific areas related to the sector’s fundraising promotional needs, these associates are teamed together to bolster the philanthropic intentions of not-for-profit and for-profit clients, through ‘best practice’ project management and advising. Susan’s experience with marketing and fundraising dates back to the 1980’s when she began her career as the Assistant Director of Marketing at Bank of Boston (before it merged with Bank of America). These experiences have broadened her understanding of what it means to work with people in leadership who have diverse perspectives and expectations and to put those insights into action to maximize mission objectives and outcomes…continued below

Vanessa Cerillo, Marketing and Communications Director, New England Public Radio

Born and raised in western Massachusetts, Vanessa was happy to return to the valley in 2008 after several years spent in Boston (where she worked for WGBH), and New York City, to work for her hometown public radio station. The best parts of her job include working with the dozens of area non-profits that the station sponsors every year, and planning public events, from casual pub nights to the annual Arts & Humanities Award Gala. Her public radio heroes include Terry Gross and Ira Glass, whom she was able to meet shortly after joining the staff – a significant moment in her public broadcasting career.

Peter Chilton, Website and Brand Manager, New England Public Radio

Peter began his design career in 2000 at a local advertising agency. There he honed his design skills, working on diverse projects such as magazines, packaging, annual reports, corporate identity and everything in between. In 2004, Pete started his own one-man design studio and collected varied clients such as retail chains, hospitals and record labels.. In 2007, he began teaching graphic design at the prestigious Hallmark Institute of Photography in Turners Falls, MA. He became the Website and Brand Manager at New England Public Radio in January of 2012.

Ann Eagan Dawson, Principal, TechResourcesMA

Ann Dawson is Principal of TechResourcesMA, an Internet Marketing resource pool she founded 4 years ago. She received her Bachelors in Economics degree from the College of the Holy Cross. After a 20 year career with Aetna IT, as an internal consultant in Hartford, she decided it was time to work in her home town of Springfield. She had a successful career with BusinessWest as a Senior Advertising Consultant, followed by a similar position with Tortus Technologies, until branching out on her own. Ann enjoys working with small business and sharing her technical expertise with others.

Janine Fondon, President and CEO, UnityFirst.com

She is also a communications consultant who helps various clients develop ‘front page’ public relations. Her corporate communication experience includes management positions at Digital Equipment Corporation, BankBoston, ABC-TV (New York and Washington, D.C) and CBS-TV (New York). Fondon has been noted in major publications such as FORTUNE, ENTREPRENEUR, Forbes, Black Enterprise, Upscale, Boston Globe, MassLive, and BusinessWest. Thom Fox, Chief Idea Architect, BrunoFox Group

Thom Fox is an award-winning philanthropist, and Chief Idea Architect of the BrunoFox Group, a development consultancy focused on helping organizations harness the full-potential of their intellectual, financial, and brand capital. Thom is not a Guru, Shaman, or Social Witchdoctor – he’s someone who understands social media and drives results. Along with publishing two independent titles though social platforms, Thom has built successful YouTube strategies for non-profits delivering over 200,000 views, and has been invited to speak about social media to audiences across the country.

Dianne Fuller Doherty, Regional Director, Western Massachusetts Regional Office of the Massachusetts Small Business Development Center Network (MSBDC)

The MSBDC, part of the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts, offers free and confidential business advisory services, training programs and information and referral to small businesses in Western Massachusetts. Dianne served as President and CEO of Doherty-Tzoumas Marketing, a full service advertising and public relations firm based in Springfield. Prior to that, she was Executive Director of Downtown Springfield Marketing, an organization whose mission was to promote downtown Springfield. Kristin Garini, Digital Marketing Director, Balise Dealer Services

Kris joined Balise to manage digital advertising for the company. Her role encompasses management of online properties along with SEO, paid advertising, customer relationship marketing, and chat. She also oversees the social media piece of the digital world that includes Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube just to name a few. Kris has a BBA from the University of Massachusetts and a MS in Communications and Information Management from Bay Path College.

Leslie Harris CAWA, Executive Director, Dakin Humane Society

Leslie Harris has been the executive director of the Dakin Humane Society since 2001. She began her career in animal welfare in 1989 when she joined the staff of the Humane Society of Seattle/King County. Since then, she has worked in various positions at animal shelters around the country. Leslie is especially interested in developing progressive programs that build community-wide efforts to target the sources of animal homelessness, including high-volume sterilization, humane feral cat management, and compassionate approaches to helping underserved communities of people with pets.

Angela Lussier, Chief Strategy Officer, BrunoFox Group

Angela Lussier is partner and Chief Strategy Officer with the BrunoFox Group in West Springfield, MA. Angela is an award-winning speaker, author of the Seth Godin-recommended book The Anti-Resume Revolution, and an entrepreneur to the core. Angela’s advice has been featured on Yahoo!, NBC, ABC, Virgin.com, The Ladders, About.com, CBS Money Watch, and others. She is a TEDx alumna and graduate of UMass Amherst. Dale A. MacDonald, Media Director, Balise Dealer Services

Dale has been with Balise for 16 years. She handles all media related functions including media planning, placement and co-op. She also has an active role in the Balise Community Action Team, the company’s philanthropic arm that oversees charitable contributions, as well as managing all aspects of public relations. Dale holds a BA from Quinnipiac University in Mass Communications and English.

Gainer O’Brien, Creative Director, Darby O’Brien Advertising

For the past 8 years, Gainer has helped focus the agency on new media strategy and concept development. He’s brought the family business into the next generation while still maintaining Darby’s old school commitment. He works with his brother Joe and Art Director, Mat Dubord, to keep the agency ahead of developments in online media. Gainer juggles a variety of other tasks, as well – including dealing with production estimates and vendors, arranging photo and commercial shoots and writing headlines.

Christine Romanko, Digital Media Specialist, MassLive

Christine Romanko, a 2002 graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Isenberg School of Management, has been in marketing and advertising for more than a decade and has a wide array of knowledge in both traditional and digital media. Her experience includes managing and maintaining websites, the development and execution of marketing campaigns for broadcast media integrated with digital components, and the effective application of both search engine marketing and optimization. She has worked with businesses of every size, from small locally owned businesses to Fortune 500 companies. Christine recently joined MassLive to continue developing her career and further help clients reach their best potential customers online.

Alfonso Santaniello, President and CEO, The Creative Strategy Agency

Alfonso Santaniello’s passion for creativity, entrepreneurship and digital marketing led him to start the Creative Strategy Agency in August of 2009. His forward thinking and innovative strategies have made him and the agency social media specialists. His personable, hold nothing back, fun sense of humor and personality has allowed him to connect with clients, and truly understand what they are trying to achieve. When he’s not busy laughing off a storm hosting Strictly Businews, a business web talk show he created, he’s in the community sitting on the Board of Directors to a few local nonprofits, charities and organizations, volunteering his time and services.

Randall Smith, Digital Strategist, Power Labs

Randall Smith helps advocacy organizations and campaigns using digital tools to find and engage their supporters, raise money, and win campaigns. Prior to Power Labs, Randall was a deputy director at Change.org where he helped people develop and win campaigns that mobilized hundreds of thousands of people and won significant victories including getting a 10 year-old Philadelphian a life-saving lung transplant.

Sarah K. Tanner, Senior Program Director, Financial Development Agency

Sarah has worked in the resource development field for over 15 years. She started her career at the Mile High United Way, serving as a marketing manager for information and referral services. She continued her tenure with the United Way system serving in leadership positions with United Way of New York City, United Way of Hampshire County, and most recently, United Way of Pioneer Valley, where she served as Senior Vice President of Strategic Communications and Resource Development. Shane Wirta, Local Director- Advance Visibility, MassLive

As Local Director of Advance Visibility, Shane Wirta leads and drives all digital initiatives for each of Advance Digital properties in Western Mass, which include The Republican and MassLive.com. With over 15 years working in various high profile marketing roles, Shane has accumulated a vast experience that extends to both the client and agency side of the business. Shane a unique vision on how to create and build digital strategies that drive traffic, leads and ultimately revenue for multiple businesses in various verticals. Susan Alston   She has served as an Executive Director at a national nonprofit; Annual Fund and Major Gift Officer at two colleges; Director of Development at a university and a human service organization; a Vice President of Development and President of a Foundation. Susan has a recent Master’s Degree in Strategic Fundraising and Philanthropy from Bay Path College (2012) and is a member of: Advisors in Philanthropy, Association of Fundraising Professionals Western Massachusetts (AFPWM)-President Elect, Trustee at VERTIS Preparatory Charter School, Springfield, MA, and Women in Philanthropy-Western Massachusetts. Recent advising includes: Children’s Chorus of Springfield, Community Music School of Springfield, and Bay Path College.

Dianne Fuller Doherty   Active in civic affairs in the Greater Springfield area, she is a founder of the Women’s Fund of Western Massachusetts, an endowment to support women and girls, based on the values of the International Women’s Conference in Beijing. Dianne serves on the boards of the Pioneer Valley Plan for Progress, Bay Path College, The Community Foundation of Western Mass. and the task force of the Holyoke Innovation District, part of the High Performance Computer Center Project. Dianne is a board member of Digital Divide Data, a US based company which offers employment and education to disadvantaged youth in Cambodia, Laos and Kenya. In the spring of 2010, Dianne taught Finance for three months at Shandong University, in Jinan China. Dianne has previously served on the boards of Glenmeadow, Mass Humanities, World Affairs Council, A Better Chance, YMCA, WGBY and the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce. She is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College and received her MBA from Western New England College. Dianne was a recipient of the 2004 Girl Scouts of Pioneer Valley Woman of Distinction award. She is the recipient of the 2009 Mount Holyoke College Distinguished Alumna award, The Edna Mahan Award for Innovative Leadership and the 2009 Pioneer Valley William Pynchon Community Service Award.

Janine Fondon    Janine Fondon is President and CEO of UnityFirst.com, a 2 million+ online communications network that engages people in ‘real-world’ topics and events regarding diversity and inclusion.

Angela Lussier    Ms. Lussier is on the Board of Directors of Junior Achievement of Western Mass, the Business Advisory Council for the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission, and a mentor with Valley Venture Mentors.

Sarah K. Tanner…She has also served in development positions with UMass Libraries (Amherst, MA) and Noble Health Systems (Westfield, MA). In addition to her work in resource development, Tanner serves as a Faculty Practitioner with the graduate programs in nonprofit management and philanthropy at Bay Path College in Longmeadow, MA. Tanner earned her B.S. from the School of Public Health at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and received her Master of Public Administration degree from the Graduate School of Public Affairs at the University of Colorado. She is a graduate of the Human Service Forum’s Emerging Leaders Institute, as well as an inaugural graduate of the Leadership Pioneer Valley class of 2012. She was named to BusinessWest Magazine’s inaugural ‘40 Under 40’ list in 2007, recognizing the professional, civic, and community-oriented success of 40 young professionals working in Western Mass.

Shane Wirta    Shane is a graduate of Seton Hall University and currently lives in Glastonbury, CT with his wife and two daughters.
