Scheduled Giving – why it is best to wait until 11/25

You are excited for Valley Gives 2013 (and so are we) but don’t jump the gun!  Valley Gives is an exciting 24-hour giving event—not a long and drawn-out affair.

So use the next few months to thoughtfully prepare for 12.12.13 and the weeks leading up to it. It is too early to ask for donations or do much publicly right now so sit tight on that.

Specifically, please do not use the schedule a gift function before November 25th.

Here is why:

  • 24 hours is exciting! It breaks through the year end clutter to help you find new donors. Long campaigns have their place but Valley Gives is different. Keep Valley Gives fresh, keep it focused on the 24 hours.
  • “Scheduled Gifts” for Valley Gives should be used as a convenience, not a strategy. Think of it like absentee voting…only to be used when necessary!
  • Using “Scheduled Gifts” too early is risky, and it won’t “turn on” properly until 11/25 – Last year, many donors making early gifts didn’t set the date correctly and their gift didn’t count for Valley Gives day, leading to confusion and bad donor relations.  This problem has been fixed but won’t be activated until 11/25.  If you have to send the link to your Razoo page before Nov. 25 (for example in an appeal letter) be sure to instruct donors not to visit the site until 11-25.

Instead of asking for donations right now, use your time to plan and prepare!  Attend trainings, read and use materials from the Nonprofit Toolkit, and strategize/plan for the big day.

Would it be possible to put some kind of note on our pages that says to people, “If you give today, your donation will not count for Valley Gives. Please come back after November 25th” for those who go early?
